Floyd participates in regional education issues conference

State Rep. Hugh Floyd (D-Norcross) participated in a series of in-depth education discussions at the Legislative Work Conference of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) in New Orleans earlier in the year.

Topics covered during the conference ranged from preschool to high school graduation and participation in higher education.

“This conference gave me the opportunity to meet with legislators from states that are members of SREB,” Floyd, a member of the House Education Committee, said. “We tackle issues vital to our states and get to hear first-hand what is going on in education across the South.”

SREB President Mark Musick added, “The Legislative Work Conference is just that: it is a time when legislators from across the SREB region work together and get factual information on educational issues that are important to all of them.”

The highlight of the conference, held in conjunction with the annual SREB Board meeting, was the presentation of several SREB reports. The theme of the conference was SREB’s Challenge to Lead Goals for Education, which assert that Southern states can lead the nation in educational progress. The question posed at the opening of the conference was “Are we crazy, or really smart?”

The SREB, the nation’s first compact for education, has 16 member states: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
