Property tax relief grants should be protected
In an effort to protect Georgia's families, I am joining many of my legislative colleagues to do all we can to keep the $428 million homeowner tax relief grants that Gov. Perdue is putting on hold. If Perdue's tax-shift scheme is enacted, homeowners could see as much as a $300 property tax increase this year.
Because of unsound budget policies and $1.5 billion in education tax shifts by the governor, homeowners in Gwinnett County are already paying too much in property taxes. The last thing we need is another property tax hike from the state.
What the govenor is trying to do is balance the books on the backs of property owners and shift the blame to local governments and school systems. That's just wrong, and the General Assembly should not allow it to happen.
